                                                  Mexico is in Celebration.

In 2010, Mexico commemorated the bicentennial of its Independence movement and the centennial of its revolution with an extensive program of events. Twenty nine hundred million pesos are expected to be spent in this whole celebration on Sept 16th and 20th.  Should Mexicans really be celebrating this? I don’t think they should. They should better spend that money on issues more important than a party. For example, poverty that affects half of the population, security which is an issue that has almost all the population scared and unsafe, and education in Mexico as a country is in the 60th place worldwide. We must do something better than celebrating the centennial and bicentennial in such a big way.

The first issue the Mexican government should take care of is poverty, because 50% of the people live in extreme poverty. If the government appropriates the money, it would improve not only the way of life for the people, but it would create more job opportunities, because it would both boost exports and give farmers raw materials. Finally, the economy of the country would improve.

Security goes hand in hand with economic growth. The Mexican government only invests 1% of the budget in security and the UNESCO says they should spend at least 4%. Most of the people that commit crime don’t have jobs and that becomes a chain effect; because, if one takes a little of another person, then that person who lost something is likely to commit another crime. If people think committing crime is an easy way to grow their economy, it will only make the situation worse.

In Mexico, education is about 6.5 average (C for the U.S) in elementary education and most of the professors are not well prepared to teach. Education is not only about getting a job. If we educate our children, and teach them what is good and bad, and the importance of security, we would see that they are just not successful people, but they as a community would learn how to socialize with each other.

Finally, these issues should make us think, if we really want to celebrate in such a big way, because there are more problems that could be improved by spending more money. Just imagine, no people having to steal, because they don’t have money to take care of their family. So, you can feel safe walking on the streets and knowing your kids are going to have a better future. All this could make Mexico a better place, not only for our people, but also for other countries to visit, or invest here and leave a better Mexico to our kids.
